Provisional Registration

The Council or the Registrar may register, provisionally, a person who —
(a)  has complied with Section 15, of the Medical Act
(b)  has satisfied the qualification requirements referred to under Section 16, of the Medical Act
(c)  has been offered employment for a period of internship in a hospital in The Bahamas

Prerequisites for registration: –
Medical Degree acceptable to the Medical Council

If the person does not hold a medical degree recognized by the Council the following
is required: –

The successful completion of the following examinations

  • (CAMC)                  –  Caribbean Association of Medical Councils Examination
  • (USMLE  I & II)     – United States Medical Licensing Examination
  • (PLAB)                   – Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board
  • (MCCEE)               – Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Examination

Temporary Registration

The Council or the Registrar may register, temporarily, for a period not exceeding six months, on payment of the prescribed fees and a person who  –
(a)  has complied with Section 15, of the Medical Act
(b)  has satisfied the qualification requirements referred to under Section 16, of the Medical Act

Prerequisites for registration: –  Non – Bahamians
(a)  has complied with Section 15, of the Medical Act
(b)  has satisfied the qualification requirements referred to under Section 16, of the Medical Act
(c ) has a copy of the employment contract with the sponsoring facility
(d ) has a valid work permit

Specially Registration

The Council or the Registrar may specially register, for a period not exceeding three years
any person who –

(a)  has complied with Section 15, of the Medical Act
(b)  has satisfied the qualification requirements referred to under Section 16, of the Medical Act
(c ) is employed on a full time basis with the Public Hospitals Authority
(d ) is employed on a full time basis in the public service
(e)  is doing special work in the field of public health or research

Special Purpose Registration

The Council or the Registrar may specially register, for a period not exceeding seven days
any person who –

(a)  has complied with Section 15, of the Medical Act
(b)  has satisfied the qualification requirements referred to under Section 16, of the Medical Act
(c)  meets the requirements for specific registration that is –
•  Telemedicine
•  Stem Cell Therapy and Research
•  Advanced Medical Therapy and Research
(d)  has a valid work permit

Medical Practitioner

The Council or the Registrar may register, for a period that may be indefinite unless removed for cause, a person who –
(a)  has complied with Section 15, of the Medical Act
(b)  has satisfied the qualification requirements referred to under Section 16, of the Medical Act

Specialist Registration

The Council or the Registrar may register a medical practitioner as a specialist in the specialist register where the medical practitioner:
(a) has completed the required training in a specialty as set out in Section 26
(b)  has obtained the relevant qualification from an institution or body
(c)  who possess the qualification relating to a specialty specified in the Third Schedule

NB
There is a grandfather clause that expires December 31, 2014 that allows medical practitioners without formal training with a minimum of 25 years practicing as a specialist to be considered for registration under this Section

Certificate of Registration

A certificate of registration issued to a medical practitioner by the Registrar shall be valid for the period specified in the certificate.

Every holder of a certificate of registration shall display it in a prominent position in his place of business.

Where a certificate of registration has been lost, destroyed or mutilated it may be replaced by the Council upon the application of the holder and on the payment of the specified fee.
